In this course, you will gain an understanding of Alberta’s legal environment, including constitutional, administrative, and contract law.
Topics Covered:
- How statutes and regulations are created and the benefits and limitations of each
- The Canadian judicial system, focussing on the courts of Alberta
- The constitutional framework of government in Canada, with emphasis on the division of powers between the Parliament of Canada, the provincial legislatures, and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms
- Constitutional and other legal limits on a legislative body to delegate legislative, administrative and quasi-judicial powers
- Sources of executive and administrative power
- Substantive errors, procedural errors, and errors of discretion that allow courts to overturn government
decisions
- The role of the courts in reviewing executive and administrative action
