Who should attend

The program is open to managers and senior administrative, technical and professional employees in the Alberta public service along with employees at similar levels within the Alberta government’s agencies, boards, and commissions.

Senior and executive managers interested in learning opportunities should contact their department’s training manager for information on the Senior & Executive Managers’ Development Program (SEMDP). Information on the program is also available at www.chr.alberta.ca/mdp.

How The Program Works

The program consists of 21 different modules, ranging from 1 day to 5 days in length. These modules address a variety of Alberta public service initiatives, including the renewed vision and values, competency framework, Business Excellence and Service Excellence. Such initiatives are incorporated into the appropriate modules to ensure program comprehensiveness and consistency.

No modules are mandatory. You are welcome to complete as few or as many modules as you wish. A Management Development Program Certificate will be awarded to those who complete 19 or more days of training in the program. To provide greater customer service and increased access to employee development opportunities, certain program modules will be offered at the Executive Education office in Calgary. If demand is great enough, additional modules will be considered for delivery in Calgary.

How are Modules Presented?

The modules are presented using a combination of lectures, group discussions, case studies, and guest speakers who bring their practical perspective to the topic. The content of the modules and the case studies are continuously reviewed to ensure they are current and relevant to the Alberta public service.

Eligibility for Credit

Graduates of the MDP program earn 3 credits which can be applied to the University of Alberta’s MBA program. Credits can be applied to an elective course in the second year if attending the MBA program full-time or the third or fourth year if attending part-time.

Students entering the MBA program in the Public Management Stream who are employed in the public sector will automatically be considered for the Jim Dixon Public Management Scholarship. This $3000 award will be made each year to the student who offers the greatest potential to succeed in the program and to be a leader in public service management. This potential will be evidenced by her/his record of academic achievement and career progress.
