About the Western Centre for Economic Research (WCER)

Established in 1985, the Western Centre for Economic Research (WCER) is a University of Alberta based research centre sponsored by the Alberta School of Business and the Faulties of Arts (Deparment of Economics) and Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences

The WCER monitors the performance of Western Canada's economy, its policies and programs and implications for business enterprises. Drawing on a wide range of expertise, the recent work of the WCER has included analyses of the Alberta resource economy, Western Canadian international trade, the effects of free trade agreements, barriers to trade, and the role of small businesses in the West.

Discover the results of independent academic research through a series of publications: Information Bulletins, Intergovernmental Fiscal Relations, the Competitiveness Series with the Centre for International Business Studies (CIBS) and monographs about Alberta and Canada. The WCER offers conferences and seminars co-sponsored with institutes, centres and organizations. Research activities are also available on a fee-for service basis.
