New Course Offered in Summer Term: Advising Family Business
SMO 488 LEC B1 Tuesdays & Thursdays, 2-4:50 pm
In this new course, students will gain in-depth technical knowledge of the processes, practices and plans that professionals use when advising members of family enterprises. Illustrative topics related to governance include:
- Shareholder assemblies and unanimous shareholder agreements
- Advisory boards and boards of directors
- Family councils, family constitutions and family foundations
- Illustrative topics related to the inter-generational transfer of ownership and wealth including taxation issues, wills and estates, freezes, and family trusts
- The consulting process
Instructor: Gary Coskey CA
Over the past four decades Gary has been a trusted advisor to numerous family and owner-managed businesses across Western Canada. During a successful career as a chartered accountant and business advisor, he provided professional advice in the practice areas of taxation, strategic, operational, financial, and retirement planning. By developing a specialty practice, Gary added value to his family enterprise clients, through a holistic approach to family, business and ownership issues. He has assisted the ownership and leadership teams with developing structures and processes for business strategy meetings, succession planning, next generation leadership development, creating independent advisory boards and family meeting structures.
