Founded a century ago, the University of Alberta is one of the top 100 teaching and research universities in the world, serving more than 36,000 students with 11,000 faculty and staff. The U of A has an annual budget in excess of $1 billion and attracts more than $480 million in external research funding. It offers close to 400 undergraduate, graduate and professional programs in 18 faculties.

Approximately 1,300 of those students are international students, coming from 106 countries around the globe. The University of Alberta currently has 170 formal linkages with institutions in 45 countries. The University of Alberta provides a first-class learning environment with advanced facilities and an ever-growing campus.

  • The main campus covers about 50 city blocks with more than 90 buildings and additional land off campus for research
  • There are more than 400 distinct research laboratories and several major agricultural research stations within the University
  • The University is home to the largest shared-memory computer in Canada, Canada’s most powerful laser, and an 800 MHz NMR spectrometer (the highest commercially available field)
  • University of Alberta Libraries, Canada’s second-largest research library, ranks first in volumes per student with 5.7 million volumes and has access to more than 10,000 full-text electronic journals and more than 600 electronic databases
  • The Timms Centre for the Arts is the newest and finest theatre teaching facility in Canada
