Roger Phillips was born in Ottawa but grew up in Arvida (now part of la ville Saguenay in Québec). He possesses a Bachelor of Science (Physics and Mathematics) from McGill University and is a Chartered Physicist (UK). He is fluent in English and French.
In 1999, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada and, in 2002, was made a member of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit. Also in 2002, he became the first Canadian to be awarded the Gary Memorial Medal of the American Iron and Steel Institute for services to the North American steel industry. He was named a Fellow of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom in 1992.
Mr Phillips served twenty years as President and Chief Executive Officer of IPSCO Inc. before retiring at the start of 2002. His career prior to joining IPSCO was exclusively with the Alcan Inc. group of companies from 1960 to 1981 in a variety of senior management positions. Immediately prior to leaving Alcan to join IPSCO, he was Vice President and Chief Technical Officer and President of what is now Alcan Inc. and President of its subsidiary Alcan International Ltd.
His current directorships include the Canadian Pacific Railway, Cliffs Natural Resources Inc, and La fédération des chambres de commerce du Québec.
He is a trustee of The Fraser Institute.He is honourary director of the C. D. Howe Institute and the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce. He is a past director of the Toronto Dominion Bank, Imperial Oil Limited, and Inco Limited.
He is a member of several scientific organizations including the Institute of Physics, the Canadian Association of Physicists, the American Physical Society, and the American Geophysical Union.
Among some of the numerous past board affiliations are Chairman, Canadian Unity Council; Member, Economic Council of Canada; Co-chairman, Canadian Steel Trade and Employment Congress; and member, Business Council on National Issues (now styled the Canadian Council of Chief Executives).
Roger Phillips is married and has one adult daughter.
