Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment
The newly created Major in Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment (NREE) is a truly unique major that provides students in the BCom program the opportunity to develop specific and focused knowledge of resource, energy and environmental issues and industries in their studies. The program builds on the core strength of the BCom program and leverages the significant expertise within the faculty and linkages that the School of Business has in the business, government and NGO sectors of the economy.
This major, the only one of its kind in North America, builds on the Province of Alberta’s economic and geographic strengths, the resource base of Alberta, Canada and North America, and the teaching and research excellence of the School of Business as well as the worldwide reputation of the University of Alberta in many fields associated with natural resources, energy and the environment.
Students in this major will have a running start in developing careers in Alberta’s vibrant energy, environment and resource sectors. These sectors of the economy traditionally hire an important proportion of BCom graduates. Additional training and insight into these industries and markets will be of great value to undergraduates interested in pursuing challenging and rewarding careers. Further, independent of the cycles of the provincial economy, the management of energy, environment and resource issues will continue to present tremendous employment opportunities for graduates of the BCom program in Alberta and elsewhere. Thus, an opportunity to develop greater expertise and experience in NREE, through this Major, will be of value to students in the long term.
The major attracts students with a variety of interests in business, including finance, accounting, law, economics, and strategy. The common interest is the resource, energy and environmental issues and industries.
The major benefits from an active student club, the Commerce Energy and Environment Group as well as the support of the Centre for Applied Business Research in Energy and the Environment. Through these two organizations, students are given the opportunity to attend seminars and workshops and interact with industry leaders from business, government and the NGO sector, providing real-world experience to the academic learning.
