Congratulations to our MBAs and BComs for bringing home silver medals from the Canadian MBA Games and Inter-Collegiate Business Competition!
MBA Games
In addition to placing second overall at the Canadian MBA Games held at Laval University in Quebec City Jan. 8-10, our team of 40 MBA students won the athletic portion of the challenges and placed third in academics. This is the second year for the U of A to take the silver medal against 20 other universities from across the country.
The 2010 MBA Games had the theme of “Ethics and Leadership” with U of A captain Chris Safinuk, along with co-captains Judd Kruger and Ryan Loney leading our team to defend the honour and reputation of the Alberta School of Business.
ICBC
At ICBC, our Marketing team of Jessica Leung and Katie Berg place second at the competition held in Kingston, Ont. at Queen’s University. First place went to University of British Columbia, while University of Calgary placed third.
The Inter-Collegiate Business Competition is Canada's premier undergraduate business case competition with eight different events for students to choose to compete in. Only six teams are selected in each event and this year the competition was stiff with the Inter-University Round attracting 150 impressive submissions from 28 universities across Canada and internationally.
In addition, our MBA team of Tamara Korassa, Hardeep Gill, Ha Lu and captain Tom Perras, with alternate Lauren Burns and faculty advisor Russ Farmer attended the John Molson MBA International Case Competition Jan. 4-9, held at Montreal’s Concordia University.
It combined daily case sessions with a myriad of networking and social events over the week, plus provided a great chance to get to know business leaders and students from more than 30 international schools.
As well, our BCom team of Andrew Purschke, Lacey Suen, Sid Tetz, Alecia Langlois, and Steffen Janzen, with faculty adviser Paul Messinger won the Spirit Award at the Manitoba International Marketing Competition held Jan. 6-10 in Winnipeg against 15 schools from nine countries.
Next up for the undergraduates is the Jeux du Commerce West Business Competition January 15-17 in Prince George, B.C. It is the largest and most prestigious undergraduate competition in Western Canada, combining academics, athletics, social and charitable aspects.
The competition is comprised of 10 academic cases, a structured debate, an athletic tournament and an “Amazing Race meets Fear Factor” type social challenge.
JDC will see the U of A team, led by Captain Melissa Ball, attempt to meet or beat last year’s results. As the host school, the University of Alberta had an unprecedented year at JDC West in 2009, taking home eight finalist trophies, including gold in the inaugural “non-profit” case, and the coveted School of the Year award. Good luck to all our participants!
