About Gary

Gary Smith joined the faculty of the Alberta School of Business as an Executive Professor in 2010. In these duties Gary teaches courses and liaises with the business community. He is also Program Director of the PRIME Program. He was the recipient of the McKenzie Visiting/Sessional Teaching Award at the Alberta School of Business in 2012.

Prior to joining the Alberta School, Gary was Chief Economist at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo). In that position, Gary provided economic analysis and commentary within AIMCo and to AIMCo’s clients and oversaw the tactical asset allocation program.

Before joining AIMCo in 2004, Gary worked at and was a shareholder in Casgrain and Company Limited, a privately-held investment dealer specializing in fixed income sales and trading. There he performed several duties, including financial engineering of specialized fixed income products, trading of Canadian corporate bonds and asset-backed securities, as well as providing fixed income sales coverage to major Canadian institutional investors. Before joining Casgrain and Company, Gary worked on the fixed income trading desk at Alberta Treasury. In addition to industry work, he has taught extensively at the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Alberta, and Concordia University in both undergraduate and Masters-level programs.

Gary completed his undergraduate and masters-level training at the University of Saskatchewan and received a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Alberta. He is a CFA Charterholder and serves on the board of the Edmonton CFA Society. In addition to his duties at the Alberta School of Business, Gary is a member of the Investment Committee of the Edmonton Community Foundation and the Investment Advisory Committee of Alberta Municipal Services Corporation. He is a past member of the Investment Committee of the City of Edmonton. He also provides advisory services to clients on investment matters.
