Exploring SME Exporting Opportunities and Challenges
Edward J. Chambers and Williams J. Shaw Based on a survey of nearly 400 western businesses with fewer than 100 employees, Reaching Out: Exploring SME Exporting Opportunities and Challenges examines small business exports to the US and other international markets. The study details the issues small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face in capitalizing on global trade opportunities and provides specific recommendations for improving Western Canada’s export performance. Exporting provides important opportunities for growth and profit in the small business sector, which is an extremely important component of the Western Canadian economy. There are 50 per cent more new businesses formed per capita in Western Canada than in other parts of the country and, over the past decade, small businesses have been responsible for one of every two jobs created.
