Don Zinyk is an Executive Professor in Family Enterprise at the Alberta School of Business at the University of Alberta. Don Zinyk was a partner in the owner-managed business group of KPMG’s Edmonton office. Mr. Zinyk’s areas of focus are succession planning, tax and financial planning as it applies to family businesses and general financial services.
With over 30 years of experience as a partner, Mr. Zinyk has devoted his career to providing services to family and owner-managed businesses. For the past several years, Mr. Zinyk has focused in the area of succession planning and has assisted several business families plan for the transfer of their business to the next generation.

Gary Coskey - Executive Professor in Residence

Gary Coskey is the author and developer of the ABFI cornerstone program, ‘The 12 Steps of Succession Planning’. Watch his presentation about the Road to Retirement below.
Over the past four decades Gary has been a trusted advisor to numerous family and owner-managed businesses across Western Canada. He finished a successful 40 year career as a chartered accountant and business advisor providing professional advice in the practice areas of taxation, strategic, operational, financial, and retirement planning. During this time, Gary developed a speciality practice, adding value to his family enterprise clients, through a holistic approach to family, business and ownership issues.
Gary has worked with a multitude of entrepreneurial families ranging from medium to large manufacturing and wholesale companies to owner-managed companies in a variety of sectors of the economy. He has assisted the ownership and leadership teams with developing structures and processes for business strategy meetings, succession planning, next generation leadership development, creating independent advisory boards and family meeting structures.
Gary has a long history in teaching seminars and courses on tax planning, entrepreneurship, financial planning and retirement planning at the University of Alberta, Banff School of Advanced Management and Grant MacEwan College.
Gary holds a Commerce degree from the University of Alberta and possesses a number of designations as a Chartered Accountant. In addition, he is also a trained facilitator in the RoadMap Course for Entrepreneurial Families.

Fred Estlin - Executive Professor in Residence

Fred graduated with Bachelor of Administration from the University of Saskatchewan in 1971, obtained his CA in 1975 and was named a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1998. His community involvement includes Board Chair of Grande Prairie Regional College, founding Co-chair of Rural Alberta's $100,000,000 Development Fund and the Executive Committee of the Alberta Economic Development Authority.
Until recently, Fred maintained a part time accounting practice catering to small and medium-sized owner managed businesses in the Grande Prairie area. He has had extensive involvement including ownership in 15 businesses, including two which were second generation family businesses and he was a non-family member shareholder.
Fred's considerable exposure to the issues involved in owner managed businesses and the passion to see them succeed are what led him to the Alberta Business Family Institute.

Val Monk - Executive Professor in Residence

Val has worked in the field of human dynamics and business systems for over 30 years. As someone who grew up in a family business that has now been passed on to the second generation, she has a firsthand appreciation of the incredible energy and commitment that goes into a family business, succession planning and leadership development. In addition to her experiences and observations of her own family’s business, Val has offered her professional expertise as a leadership coach, family business advisor, mediator and communication consultant to businesses, organizations, educational systems, agencies and individuals throughout Canada and the United States. In addition to working with businesses and organizations, she has provided private consultation to high profile executives and professionals seeking personal growth and support.
As an active member of the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise, Val is a past national board member of CAFÉ National, participated as a member of the CAFÉ National Family council Facilitator’s Advisory Committee, worked as the Program/Speaker/Chair for the CAFÉ 2002 National Symposium, and has been in numerous roles on the Manitoba CAFÉ Board. Val also works as a family business advisor with the Alberta Business Family Institute, affiliated with the University of Alberta.
In a professional capacity, Val specializes in the Business Family Risk Management. She is a facilitator for ROADMAP (a world class family business education program), a Business Family council Facilitator, a mediator, and leadership development coach. She is a popular keynote speaker and program facilitator known for her energetic and fun style. With her combined expertise in both psychology and business systems, Val possesses a unique ability to integrate a diverse range of knowledge and experiences. In addition to managing her business, she is a faculty member with the William Glasser Institute, a Certified Facilitator of Peak Performance Systems and a Master Certified Trainer in Language and Behavior Profile.
A graduate of the University of Manitoba, Val holds two degrees in psychology, and is in the process of completing her Master’s degree in Organizational Learning and Leadership Development from the University of Calgary. Val has created a strong reputation for her enthusiastic and energetic approach, supported by her firm belief in continuous learning and improvement. Her passion and commitment to helping professionals grow is evident in the extensive business referral base that she has developed. On a personal level, Val is married to Ted, a retired teacher of 32 years. They have two adult sons, Jordan and Tyson, who have enjoyed very successful athletic careers in freestyle skiing.
