Over the past decade, Margaret-Jean Mannix has been an active participant in her family’s businesses which include coal mining, oil and gas exploration, transportation, railway maintenance, venture capital and real estate. Margaret-Jean currently sits on the Board of Directors for Mancal Corporation, Loyola Family Business Center, and is Chairperson of the Carthy Foundation. She is heavily involved in the study of family business and is a keen promoter and supporter of ‘next generation' education.

Phil Renaud - Expert in Residence - Succession, Wills and Estates

Phil Renaud graduated from the University of Alberta in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts and in 1980 with a Bachelor of Laws. He practices exclusively in the area of estates and trusts, which includes wills, trusts, estate administration, estate planning, First Nations trusts, farm and business succession planning, and mediation of estate disputes.
Phil served as National Chair of the Wills, Estates and Trusts Section of the Canadian Bar Association from 2003 to 2005 and as Past Chair for 2005/2006. He served as President of the Estate Planning Council of Edmonton in 1995, is a Fellow of The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and a member of STEP Edmonton (the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners). He served as a Director of CAFE Edmonton (the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise) from 1996 to 2001 and is a CAFE-trained Family Council Facilitator.
Phil taught Wills at the University of Alberta Law School from 1990 to 1997 and at the Bar Admission Courses for the Legal Education Society of Alberta from 1986 to 1996. He is a Mentor on Wills and Estates for the Law Society of Alberta, and has lectured and published papers on many estate-planning issues for various organizations including the Canadian Bar Association, Legal Education Society of Alberta, Canadian Tax Foundation, Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, Canadian Association of Financial Planners, Estates, Trusts and Pensions Journal, and the Agriculture Tax Update for Professionals for Alberta Agriculture in 1996 and 2001.
